Second congress of SEKE
[18-25 April 1920]
In the congress resolution the SEKE’s revolutionary perception is stated clearly, as it is declared that «the transition from the bourgeois to socialist state cannot be manifested by reforming the system to make it more democratic; the only intermediate stage is the dictatorship of the working class until all the necessary provisions for the abolition of classes come into existence». They also decided to add, in the title of the party, the term Communist, so the party was to be named Socialist Labour Party of Greece (Communist).
The congress also discussed and approved the Constitution. Discussions were also held on the fundamental principle of organisation and a decision was made for the centralised organisation of the Party, excluding «the existence of organised fractions within the party».
In addition the congress dealt with the farmers’ issues having the position for expropriation of big estates with no compensation, in opposition to the position of nationalisation held by the first congress; finally, however, the nationalisation position was maintained. The party’s participation in the elections was discussed as well, and its independent presence without any co-operation with other bourgeois parties was decided. The congress decided to establish a publishing company and the newspaper «RIZOSPASTIS to be placed under the control of the Central Committee appointing Giannis Kordatos the Party’s representative to «RIZOSPASTIS» in order to check the paper’s policy.
Finally, the congress refuted the mistaken view «education first – action afterwards».
