Solidarity Meeting at the 18th Congress of the KKE

Dear Comrades,

The political situation in this world is changing at a rapid speed. We witness changes in Latin America with sympathy, solidarity and support which were not believed to be possible a short time ago. Forces in favour of socialism, revolutionary and democratic forces are changing the political face of the subcontinent. For this, Cuba has delivered the decisive ideas. The navigational light from the Caribbean and from Latin America is also seen in far-away Europe.

Today the manifestations of capitalist crisis also shape the debate within society. This is the biggest world-wide economic crisis since 1929. It makes clear that neoliberal capitalism cannot exist without crisis, that the peoples of this world are expected to pay the price for this and that this system, orientated first of all on profits, is not able to live up to the expectations of the peoples concerning their future.

The manifestations of crisis are manifold. They directly affect the conditions of living by huge financial burdens but also by dangerous developments which threaten the ecological foundations necessary for the existence of mankind and nature. We experience a wave of migration showing clearly that in many parts of the world conditions prevail which cannot be called living conditions.

There is a crisis of the parliamentary system which not just a few plan to use to develop bourgeois society in the direction of reactionary forms of the execution of power. The crisis is a crisis of the capitalist system, which has up to now mobilized too few opposing forces, though, to overcome this crisis in a progressive way. Today we experience activities of resistance by companies and trade unions against putting the burdens on the working class. We see activities and demonstrations, for example against the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the NATO, against the war in Iraq, in the Near East, in Afghanistan and elsewhere. We see impressive meetings like the World Social Forum in Belem/Brazil a few weeks ago. But all this is not enough. Especially in the highly developed capitalist countries we need mass movements to push through political conditions of a peace policy, of a economic and social policy devoted to the interests of the majority of the population and to more democracy.

The movements first of all of young people in Greece are also motivating. For German trade unions it is important to realize that something like a general strike supported by millions in France, Portugal and Greece really exists - as well as the manifold activities of the working class in other parts of Europe.

The DKP - German Communist Party - is a part of all important out-of-parliament movements in the Federal Republic of Germany. We introduce our arguments, views and aims in these movements. In this way we prepare the 28th of March as a now global day of action against putting the burdens of crisis on the majority of the population. There will certainly be big demonstrations on this issue in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main. In Strasbourg and Baden-Baden we will demonstrate against the NATO policy of war on the 4th of April. The Federation of European Trade Unions and the Federation of German Trade Unions want to call for a big demonstration in Berlin in May. We will also use the participation of the DKP in the EU- and federal parliamentary elections to orientate first of all on these out-of-parliament movements and to stand for our much farther reaching demands towards changes and towards a socialist order of society.

The DKP has worked on and decided upon a new party programme in 2006. There we also developed the strategy of topical fights of resistance towards the achievement of a change of policy of an anti-monopolistic character up to perspectives of socialism. In this programme we have also formulated our view of the essential subjective and objective reasons for the collapse and the crushing of socialism in Europe. This programme serves the members of the DKP for their self- perception but it is also a public offer for discussion with other forces from the working-class- and out-of parliament movement. In this programme the DKP formulates as its aim that more concrete cooperation between the communist and working-class movement in Europe and in the whole world is necessary. We not only fight for a change of conditions in our own country and in Europe, but also finally for our future in a socialist world.

These are troubled times. Let us take advantage of them together. There is no alternative to our motto: Proletarians of all countries, unite!
