The international communist movement

The pre-Congress discussion showed particular interest in issues related to Party action in the international communist movement, in the international front of struggle against imperialism, with whatever this implies in the life of the peoples, and in the cause of peace.

The anxiety of comrades, friends and followers about the unity of the communist movement and common action was intense, and absolutely justified. Many raised the issue that in the recent past the Party should have contributed more to developing the ideological front within the ranks of the communist movement, parallel with the effort to ensure common action and coordination.

Indeed, the need has certainly matured to draw up a plan of common action and close cooperation among communist parties which have largely common ideological and political views, and which steadfastly defend Marxism-Leninism and the necessity of the struggle for socialism. The KKE believes that it is possible to be achieved a better and higher level of cooperation on matters of developing theory, on the international study of the causes of the reversal of the socialist regimes and on working out a common strategy. Forms of common cooperation must be of a practical nature and must have visible results.

This cooperation does not mean "separation walls" with workers' and communist parties with which there are ideological differences. With these parties, efforts for common action with anti-imperialist and anti-monopoly goals can and should continue. The KKE seeks relations of cooperation and channels of communication with all parties without exclusions.

Once again, we emphasised our position for more systematic and goal-oriented cooperation between communist parties, for developing forms of common action of communist parties, which not only are not in conflict with the need to build broader cooperation with other anti-imperialist forces but, on the contrary, help and serve it.

Our Party also regards as necessary and useful to express more openly any existing differences and to discuss them without the fear that this will lead to exclusions and divisions. Since these differences exist, they must be discussed and not hidden or covered up.

In the pre-Congress discussion, questions and concerns were raised about developments, especially in China, but also in other countries that are pursuing to build socialism. Party members concurred with the assessments of the CC Theses about the economy of China, the appearance of exploitive social forces with political expressions in the Chinese society, and that this harbours dangers for the interests of the people of China but also for its role in the international anti-imperialist movement. The question that arose was whether the reinforcement of capitalist relations, particularly in China, has already led or is leading to the predominance of such relations to the detriment of socialist ones. These questions were based on the negative experience of the victory of the counterrevolution and the restoration of capitalism in the former socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

The KKE is interested in studying developments in China, as well as in other countries such as Cuba, Vietnam and North Korea, through bilateral relations. At the same time it takes into account the particularities of each country, and the special difficulties each one may be facing due to imperialist pressure and isolation. Irrespective of differences of principle, with the visible strengthening of capitalist relations in China, and irrespective of the assessments that differ from one party to another, the KKE will continue its solidarity with these countries, and with the peoples who are the targets of imperialist aggression. This holds for all peoples on Earth who are being under the fire of imperialist forces.
