Anti-NATO demonstration at a NATO meeting where the GS of NATO A.F. Rasmussen.

The Greek Committee for International Détente and Peace (EEDYE) and the Students’ Front of Struggle (MAS) welcomed with anti-imperialist slogans the meeting held in Athens on the 60 year anniversary of Greece’s accession to NATO which had as its theme “Greece and NATO: Present and Future”. The General Secretary of the predatory alliance, Anders Fogh Rasmussen was one of main speakers at the meeting.

The effort of the Greek government, which mobilised the riot police, with the aim of repressing and dispersing the anti-NATO rally, did not succeed! The demonstrators militantly remained outside the building where the meeting was being held for more than two hours, ceaselessly shouting slogans: “ 60 years of NATO, the same old story, dictatorships, wars, terrorism”, “ No submission to the imperialists, the people are the only superpower” etc.

KKE: NATO is targeting the peoples and movements

In its statement regarding the visit to Greece of NATO’s General Secretary and his meetings with the government, the Press Office of the CC of the KKE stresses:

The GS of NATO did not come to Greece merely to celebrate with the PASOK-ND government the 60 year participation of our country in this imperialist-military alliance which has resulted in dictatorships, grey zones in the Aegean, the invasion and occupation of Cyprus, participation in the interventions and unjust wars in the Balkans, Middle East, Asia, Africa. He is coming to enhance even more the participation of the country in new interventions, and new wars which are being prepared by the imperialists.

The danger of the involvement of Greece in a generalized imperialist war is more visible than ever. The capitalist crisis and the competition of the imperialist centres over how they will divide up the natural resources of the Eastern Mediterranean, how they will control the transport routes of oil and natural gas, are creating such pre-conditions.

An alarm must be sounded. The people’s struggle so that the memoranda of the people’s bankruptcy do not pass must be inextricably connected with the disengagement of Greece from the imperialist organizations of NATO and the EU. NATO is a strong military weapon of the Greek plutocracy as well. They do not use it merely to draw up the borders of the countries in their interests, they need it and are ready to utilise it against the peoples of the NATO countries themselves. The strategy of NATO which was approved in Lisbon 2011 operates in the direction of the intensification of the imperialist aggressiveness. It will be further strengthened at the Summit in Chicago in the Spring of 2012.

The people and the youth must declare their decision more decisively that they are not going to agree to shed their blood in the imperialist wars so that the imperialists can resolve their differences and rivalries by force.
