Statement of the Press Office of the CC regarding the imperialist intervention in Syria

The KKE denounces the escalation of the imperialist intervention in Syria, which as in Libya, is promoted under the pretext of “democracy” and “freedom”. In this imperialist intervention we can see that they have surpassed every boundary of hypocrisy and cynicism, those who invoke “democracy” and “freedom”: the anti-people monarchies in the Gulf, Turkey, which with its army occupies half of Cyprus, the EU, where in many of its member states the CPs are banned, the USA, which from time has given birth to or supported Juntas in various corners of the planet.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Jordan together with USA and the EU play an especially reactionary role. It cannot be excluded that a military intervention against Syria will take place via these countries.

The goals of these powers are not the democratic and popular rights in Syria, as they claim. Their aim is the control of the raw materials of the region, the energy and commodity transport routes, the share of the market, the weakening of the economic and political influence which other rival powers have in the region, such as Russia and China.

So, an imperialist military intervention in Syria will provoke significant material and human destruction in this country, and in addition it will deprive the Palestinian people of a stable ally in their struggle, an ally of the anti-imperialist movements in the region, and it will even pave the way for the imperialist assault on Iran, with its nuclear programme as a pretext.

The Greek government (PASOK-ND-LAOS) has very serious responsibilities, as well the governments of the other NATO and EU countries, which in one way or another are involved in imperialist plans against Syria and Iran.

The opportunist forces also have serious responsibilities , which in the name of the “left” either directly support the imperialist intervention in Syria, under the pretext of democratic rights, or in this crucial moment maintain a position of “equal distances” and pretend that they cannot see the imperialist intervention and the anti-people plans, which are contained in this.

The KKE expresses its solidarity with the people and communists of Syria and recognises that only the people of Syria have the right to determine the future of their country, without foreign suggestions and interventions.

It calls on the Greek government here and now to stop every military cooperation with Israel. Not to provide the terrain, ports and airspace of Greece for the imperialist assault against Syria and Iran, which will lead the people of Greece and the other peoples of our region into dangerous adventures.
