KKE brings forward to the European Parliament the abstention of the EU member states from UN Assembly vote on the resolution against NAZI glorification
In his question to the European Council, Giorgos Toussas MEP of KKE, condemned the stance of the EU governments on the Resolution of the UN General Assembly which condemns the attempt to vindicate Nazism and glorify the members of the fascist “Waffen SS” as well as the desecration of anti-fascist monuments. The resolution was voted by the vast majority of the UN member states. The US, supported by the EU member states –including the PASOK government - that abstained from the vote, voted against the resolution.
The stance of the EU governments both social-democrat and liberal ones proves that anti-communism, in which the EU plays a leading role, is fully in line with the tolerance of fascism and the glorification of the fascist gangs; it is an outrageous insult to the antifascist struggle and the sacrifices of the peoples of Europe.
The MEP of KKE mentioned in his question the following:
“On 18 December, a few hours before the government of Georgia blew up an anti-fascist monument in the city of Kutaisi, a resolution had been tabled in the UN General Assembly condemning the efforts to vindicate Nazism by a number of European countries and EU Member States, such as the Baltic States and others, which acclaim as heroes the members of the fascist gangs of the 'Waffen SS'. At the same time, governments are taking decisions to pull down and dismantle monuments commemorating the anti-fascist resistance and the victory of the peoples. The overwhelming majority of UN member countries voted in favour (127), while the US was the only country to vote against, supported by the 27 EU Member States which abstained.
We ask the Council: Does the fact that the EU abstained from the vote on this resolution constitute approval and support for the glorification and rehabilitation of the fascist gangs and the collaborators of Nazi war criminals in a series of EU member states and other European countries? Do the EU and the Council approve the destruction of monuments commemorating the anti-fascist victory in EU Member States and other countries? Does the EU's refusal to condemn the glorification of fascists guilty of crimes against humanity form part of the historically ignorant attempt to equate Nazism and Communism?”
In addition, the KKE delegation in the European Parliament highlighted the need for the peoples to resist the anticommunist campaign of the Polish Authorities and condemn the ban of the communist symbols and the falsification of history which is also backed by the EU.
With a question to the EU Council, Babis Angourakis MEP of KKE condemned the ban of the communist symbols in Poland as well as the proposal of the Czech Senator Jaromír Štětina to ban the action of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. Babis Angourakis asked: “Does the Council condemn these reactionary decisions of the Polish government as well as the persecutions against communists and the working people in general?”
