Statement on the five Cuban Patriots
by Al. Papariga, General Secretary of the CC of KKEWhile in the midst of a pre-electoral period we do not forget that on 12th September it’s 11 years since the unjust imprisonment in US prisons of the five Cuban patriots, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino and Rene González for trying to protect their people from the activity of criminal gangs that operate undisturbed in the US.
We do not forget that five young men were imposed devastating sanctions based on fabricated and unsubstantiated accusations. These accusations were even condemned by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and triggered a global wave of solidarity with the Cuban 5.
We do not forget that the US governments, both the current and the previous ones, constantly raise obstacles and decline requests of their wives as well as of other relatives to visit them, revealing once more the atrocious and repulsive face of US imperialism.
We demand their immediate release!
It needs constant action, information, denunciation in order to break the wall of silence raised by the US, intensification of the mobilization for their release. The Greek people who are sensitive on issues of arbitrary and unjust detention for political reasons can and must reinforce the mobilization of people’s movement for the release of the five Cuban patriots held in US jails.
