Thousands demonstrate demanding education public and free for all

Yesterday begun the Parliamentary debate on the revision of Article 16 of the Constitution that previsions the public nature of higher education. Both major parties, New Democracy and PASOK, have declared their agreement on the issue, and expressed their support to the creation of “non-state” universities.

On the other hand, the reactions triggered by this move are running high. Protest rallies were held in all major cities throughout the country, while teachers went on a 24-hour strike and civil servants realized a 4-hours stoppage of work. As it can be expected, thousands of students participated in the mobilizations that took place in the morning.

In Athens the protests lasted till late in the afternoon with thousands of workers participating in the concert and manifestation that PAME (All Workers Militants’ Front) organized outside the parliament.

Aleka Papariga speaking to the press underscored that the final goal of both ND and PASOK parties is a single market for higher education, in which universities would compete as companies.

Next Monday the Aleka Papariga will give a press conference about a major political initiative of KKE on the issue, which will take the form of a 3-mothns national campaign for the education.
