KKE’s MEP Statement About the Arrest of Demonstrators in Leningrad
President Putin and his government under the stress of being the ‘newly baptized’ member in G8 wish to keep in tune with their imperialist allies. Thus they demonstrate politics of force against workers by imposing a police- controlled regime. A regime similar to the antipopular regimes of the US, the E.U and the other capitalist countries that try to protect themselves from the peoples with the so called anti terrorist and anti extremist laws while at the same time they violate basic liberties and rights.
All these days the Russian authorities, acting in that direction, have been trying to terrorize and prosecute Russian communists and anti-imperialists.
On July 15 they went on to arrest 21 young people in Leningrad during the anti-imperialist protestations- in which I represented my party. On the same day along with the parliament members of the State Duma V. Tioulkin, 1st secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Workers Party of Russia (RKPRP-RPK), V.Romanov, presiding board member of the Central committee of the Communist Party of Russian Federation (KPRF) and also with many more representatives of political and massive establishments we demanded from the 76th Police Precinct of St. Petersburg the immediate liberation of the arrested young people.
The attempts to terrorize the workers and the youth of Russia will not succeed! Russian youth has joined again the struggle against poverty, sordidness, exploitation and imperialist war towards a better society and socialism. They will not be terrorized by such actions!
We express our solidarity to the prosecuted young communist and anti-imperialist demonstrators!
We condemn the G8 of the most powerful capitalist countries for participating in that Summit and for being directly responsible for this outrageous situation.
We demand the immediate stoppage of all prosecutions by the Russian Police Authorities, which violate basic democratic rights and have transformed the city of Leningrad into a police-ridden ‘fortress’.
We invite all workers to express their solidarity in actions, demanding the immediate liberation of the arrested from president Putin and his government.
