KKE in solidarity with the peoples of south-eastern Asia

The position of KKE that EU’s aid to the victims of the devastating earthquake in SE Asia is less than poor was presented by the general secretary of KKE Aleka Paparigha to the Greek EU Commissioner Stavros Dimas during their meeting at the headquarters of the CC of KKE on January 2, 2005.

Speaking to the press after the meeting she stressed that an all-out support to the hit countries is needed, while at the same time we have to draw conclusions and take all necessary measures for the future. It is urgent, she said, to develop a comprehensive system of prompt warning and prevention to face similar incidents in the future.

Aleka Paparigha also underscored that “the consequences of such natural phenomena also have a marked class character”.

At the same time the All-Workers Militant Front (PAME), Greek Committee for International Peace and Détente (EEDYE), the Federation of Greek Women (OGE) and other organizations of the popular movement have launched solidarity campaigns raising funds and collecting humanitarian aid for the hit areas.

They also stress the criminal responsibilities of all those (multinationals, the colonial powers, etc) that have ceaselessly plundered these countries condemning the peoples of the region in poverty and dependence, and underline the need to break with the unequal international economic order imposed by the big imperialist powers.

As a symbolic gesture the parliamentary group of KKE offered 5000 euro to the solidarity fund.
