Joint Statement of KKE and TKP Against European Union

It is our duty to tell the truths about the EU to our people

At the summit of the European Union to be held on the 17th of December, the decision will be made whether membership negotiation talks between Turkey and the European Union should start or not. Finally, people who live in Turkey, primarily Turks and Kurds must have the real right and chance of talking and deciding on Turkey’s relations with the EU. The issue is closely related to how the class struggle in Turkey will proceed and which changes will occur in the balance of powers in the upcoming era.

Communist Party of Turkey and Communist Party of Greece cooperating long time in common actions against imperialism, war and NATO, defending the democratic and popular achievements for the benefit of the friendship and solidarity between the people of both countries regard the European Union as an imperialist institution. They consider EU to be a structure based on interstate cooperation promoting aggressivity in the international relations, uneven development between its members and fostering hegemony tendencies by the stronger states in connection with the transfer of sovereignty rights and duties of the member states.

Taking in to account the deep impact of the EU and its policies TKP and KKE decided on collaborating to inform people of both countries about the truths related with the European Union and to promote appropriate joint actions in this process.

Communist Party of Greece opposed from the very beginning to join Greece EU draw important lessons from Greece’s experience. KKE witnessed the EU’s damage to Greece’s economy, to the achievements of the working people, small entrepreneurs and farmers, to the social and cultural life as well as regarding limitation of sovereign rights and unjust foreign relations for the country. The party mobilized all her forces to struggle against the masses’ illusion about the European Union promoted by the EU bodies, Greek government and big capital, by all other political parties and powerful mass media. The Greek communists organized a strong opposition of working masses against the policies enforced by the EU, and from the beginning on it followed a line demanding Greece to quit the EU. These choices are more and more actively backed by the working people of the country.

Communist Party of Turkey has been opposing the EU membership of Turkey from the beginning on, and it has been trying to neutralize the propaganda about the European Union bringing freedom and prosperity. While Turkey already has started to face the destructive results of economic and political “reforms” enforced by Brussels, it is among the TKP’s priorities to enable large masses in Turkey to access resources of real information about the European Union and to organize political resistance against the imperialist expansionism.

Both parties are in accordance that in the struggle against imperialism, the issue of European Union is as important as the issues of the USA and NATO.

With the aim further to develop the common action against imperialism, for peaceful cooperation, friendship and solidarity between the peoples of both countries, the parties decided on collaborating in sharing the lessons to be drawn from the European Union experience for both peoples, issuing publications and organizing various meetings in order to promote common initiatives and actions for the benefit of the popular demands and movements.
