The KKE's responsibility to provide substantial help to KNE and to the youth movement

At many points and in many ways, the Theses refer to the fact that the basis on which the Party will be strengthened today will be judged by its work among the working class and its movement and among young people.

With our guidelines as criteria, we believe that we need to work in a patient and steadfast spirit toward this orientation. The pre-Congress discussion confirmed assessments about the multiform offensive launched at young people, through the entire network of restructurings that objectively generates strong trends for young people to become assimilated under the prevailing logic of the system.

At the same time, however, hopeful signs are becoming visible of the radicalisation of youth, of their struggle to solve their problems and discover prospects in their lives. Within this context, there is an even greater need to overcome the viewpoint that the Party's activity among youth begins and ends with the action of KNE. The Party's political and mass action must consider the modern particularities of the younger generation. The fact that the confrontation over its orientation is becoming more acute raises the demands of the Party's work.

During the next little while, the Party will have to play a part in helping the problems and modern needs of young people to be taken up by the labour movement more broadly. With initiatives and interventions, it should provide concrete support and prospects for their struggle and impetus to young people to join the popular movement and the struggle to resolve the basic problems of jobs, education, culture and sport, the problems of the imperialist war, the problem of narcotics and the other factors that cultivate the buying off of consciences, the crude exploitation of unemployed young people, misinformation, anti-communism, slandering militant values, the modern history of the peoples and of the revolutionary movement in Greece and worldwide.

At the same time, the entire Party, its bodies and organisations must focus attention on providing political and ideological help to KNE and strengthening the educational current among its ranks and more broadly. The criterion for the work of its cadres and bodies more generally will be its response to the task among young people.

KNE is in the course of development, a course that entails great demands, since its members and cadres live and are active in the same difficult environment in which young people as a whole live and act. Consequently, assistance to KNE cannot be limited to general recommendations. KNE must be systematically helped to learn about the Party's policy and positions, to become more familiar with its historic experience, and to be educated by the history of its movement and of the KKE. Without replacing the special responsibility of KNE for the youth movement, it is necessary for the KKE to assist KNE in a very systematic way in orienting its movement, in rallying young people together. There must be understanding of the need to coordinate its steps with the labour movement, and to participate in building the Front, of which the youth movement will be a major component. To achieve this, the entire Party, starting with the new CC, must first of all acquire a full and objective picture not only of young people's problems but also of the way in which they experience and are aware of these problems. And above all it must take into account that yielding and being assimilated constitute great dangers for the younger generation today.

This issue will not be resolved fully and in depth during the Congress proceedings. This is why it is proposed that a nationwide party conference be held on the subject of young people, which would constitute a turning point in this regard.
