Intervention of KKE for Ukranian ship-workers

The 24 Ukrainian ship-workers of the Greek-owned ship «MV ARIANA» captured 5 months ago by Somali pirates are kept hostages out to the open seas of Somalia. The pirates demand millions of dollars for their release. On this issue, the member of the CC of KKE and parliamentary representative of the Party, Spiros Chalvatzis, addressed to the Greek Minister of Defense, Evangelos Venizelos. The Minister, from his part, committed to undertake action on this issue.

Spiros Chalvatzis, in his intervention to the Defense Minister, informed him on the problem and the squalid conditions the pirates’ hostages are facing. He expressed the concern of the relatives and colleagues on the safety and life of the ship-workers. He also stressed for close examination on this issue and asked for the contribution of the Greek authorities to the hostages’ release.

It should be noted that under the pretext of piracy for more than 6 months the imperialists of NATO and EU have expanded their action in the broader region of Horn in Africa and the Indian Ocean. Ιn these missions of “detention and deterrence” Greek military ships participate under the responsibility of the governments of the social-democrat PASOK as well as of the conservative ND.
