Intervention of G. Toussas, MEP, regarding the 60 years of NATO’s criminal activity
Intervening in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, Giorgos Toussas, the KKE MEP, asked for the reinforcement of the anti-imperialist struggle of the peoples, aiming at the dissolution of the NATO, the imperialists’ war machine. The KKE MEP noted the following in his speech:
“These days, it is the 10th anniversary since the dirty war launched by the NATO and the EU governments – both centre-left and centre-right – against the Yugoslavian people; it is the 6th anniversary since the criminal war against Iraq and its occupation by the USA and their eager allies, which have cost the lives of almost 1.5 million Iraqi people; 60 years have passed since the foundation of the NATO, the imperialists’ war machine, which constitutes a threat to global peace. Preparations are in progress for the celebration of the 60th anniversary in a feast-Summit in Strasbourg.
Ten years ago, on 23rd and 24th April 1999, the leaders of the NATO member states were signing the declaration on its 50th anniversary in Washington DC, approving NATO’s new doctrine.
This is how the “new” NATO strategy was established; a strategy that officially constitutes the abolition of essential rules of the International Law, followed by a series of criminal NATO interventions such as the ones in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Middle East.
In view of the NATO Summit on 3rd and 4th April 2009, the French authorities have transformed the Strasbourg centre into a prohibited zone, activating the possibilities provided by the Schengen Treaty, in order to prevent peace demonstrators from entering France. They have mobilised a significant number of army and police forces in order to confront the demonstrators. These measures that violate essential democratic rights show the imperialists’ and NATO’s fear of the peoples.
The peoples ought to respond to the feasts celebrating the 60 years of the NATO’s criminal activity, by reinforcing the peace and anti-imperialistic movement, as well as supporting the popular demand for the dissolution of the NATO”.
