Statement of the Press Bureau of the CC of KKE on the “NO vote” in Ireland
KKE welcomes the strong NO vote expressed by the Irish people, which made the Treaty of Lisbon unenforceable. It also welcomes the working class, the small and medium scale farmers who ignored the propaganda as well as the pressing dilemma by the parties of the establishment in Ireland, the EU institutions and the governments of EU.
The NO vote of the Irish people proves that the arguments about the so-called “Irish model” and “the most favoured country” concerned the interests of the bourgeois and not the people. It reveals the magnitude of the lies of the parties that support the “Eu one-way road” speaking about the alleged “contented Irish workers”.
The NO vote of the Irish people is an act of disobedience that has a great importance for the people in Europe. It reveals that the popular indignation against EU is stirring up and evolves into disobedience. The reactionary construction of both rightwing and center-left parties, has been torn to shreds and must have the same end as the European Constitution that was rejected massively by the people. The EU governments are politically and morally exposed. Only in Ireland they did not manage to control the popular indignation. So Ireland was the only country that the popular rejection was expressed.
Nea Dimokratia and PASOK bare responsibility towards the Greek people. They have both supported the attempts to deceive the peoples of EU. In the parliament they voted hastily in favor of the Treaty of Lisbon in order to exert pressure to the Irish people that a few hours later would hold a referendum.
After the response of the Irish people, it’s time for the Greek people to demand more firmly a referendum, contributing so to the rejection of the Treaty of Lisbon and of the EU in its whole. KKE calls upon the people of Athens to participate massively in the rally in Omonia Square on Tuesday 17 June at 19:30, demanding a referendum.
The working class, the small and medium scale farmers, the self-employed and the youth must reject the fabricated arguments of the parties in service of the capital. They have to confront with the EU in order to stop further deterioration of their lives. They have to struggle in order to disengage Greece and to overthrow EU. Thus, a Europe for the peoples, a socialist Europe will be created.
