Against anticommunism - Solidarity with the Czech Communists

On the occasion of the official visit of the President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus in Greece, various actions of solidarity with the Czech communists and in protest to the persecutions in Czech Republic took place.

The reactions had been triggered by the decision taken by the Municipal Council of Athens with the votes of New Democracy and PASOK councillors to award mr. Klaus the "golden medal of the city of Athens". Reacting to the decision Spyros Halvatzis member of the PB of the CC of KKE and member of the Municipality Council of Athens had stressed that it unacceptable to honour the President of a country where communists are persecuted. Tens of trade unions also issued similar statements of protest.

In the afternoon of the 22nd of November hundreds of students of the University of Athens voiced their opposition to anticommunism. Holding a banner saying "Vaclav Klaus is persona non grata. The prohibition of KSM will not pass. Solidarity with KSM" they demonstrated outside the deanery of the University protesting his nomination as "honorary professor" of the University.

In the resolution of protest they handed over to the authorities of the university and the Czech officials the students’ association that organized the action underscore: "the supposedly democratic EU does not tolerate those that struggle for a radically different world, against exploitation and poverty, those that fight for education, for jobs with rights, for peace. We declare our solidarity with KSM and the Czech youth against the unacceptable prohibitions".

Next day, November 24, several hundreds of youth and workers responded to the call of KKE and KNE and gathered outside the Athens City Hall staging a demonstration of protest against the decision of the Municipal Council to present him with the city’s golden medal.

Mr Klaus was received with slogans against the anticommunist persecutions and in solidarity with the Czech communists. The City Committee of KKE in a communiqué notes that it is unacceptable to reward anticommunism, and stresses that "the measures against the communists always prelude more general attacks against the rights of the people".

At the same time the solidarity campaign with KSM goes on and new signatures are added daily to the online petition
