Info about the first round of the local elections
In its first evaluations, the Central Committee of KKE expressed satisfaction over the performance of the lists backed by the party. KKE cooperated with forces, parties and movements that have joined their efforts with the communists in recent fights in various fronts of struggle, namely the DIKKI party (Democratic Social Movement), the Communist Renewal and the Left Citizens’ Intervention.
In 11 cases the candidates supported by the party won the election from the first round, while in other 13 municipalities they will participate in the run-off elections at October 22. A total of 436 municipal councilors have been elected, a number that is bound to increase further after the second round.
At the level of the prefectures, where the picture is clearer, the lists supported by KKE score substantial increase of votes, something that is explicitly reflected in the mandates obtained: the number councilors at the prefecture councils rises to 64 from 48 elected in the elections of 2002.
The CC notes that the visible rise in votes scored by the joint ballots supported by these forces contains an important dynamic. At the same time, the CC of KKE underscores that the total sum of the two major parties, ND and PASOK, remains high in spite of the growing popular dissatisfaction.
The Central Committee assessed that, compared to previous local elections, the party entered the local election struggle from better positions. KKE has called upon the working people to seize the opportunity and condemn in the elections the policies of New Democracy and PASOK, as well as the policy of Synaspismos that runs in coalition with PASOK in a broad number of municipalities. As regards the runoff elections, KKE urges its supporters to cast blank or invalid votes in municipalities and prefectures where tickets of the two big parties or Synaspismos are competing.
The CC of KKE called the organizations and the leading bodies of the party to discuss the results and also collect opinions of all friends, supporters and allies that gave this battle together with the party, having as basic criterion the extent and quality of the political and ideological bonds with the working people and the popular strata and the efficiency of the party’s work in promoting and organizing the popular struggles.
